Savvy Stems
Having beautiful arrangements starts with having beautiful flowers.
Having beautiful flowers starts with setting them up for success as soon as you receive them. This step by step process will walk you through processing your blooms.
Important Notes
~ Pick your flowers up or have them delivered 2-3 days in advance. Most blooms will arrive compact and not fully bloomed so you want to give them time to achieve their full glory!
~ Your flowers will be packaged in various ways depending on where you source them. If you order them online, they will probably come in boxes and you will want to get them in water ASAP. If you pick them up locally, they may already be in water/ buckets but you will still want to follow the below steps.
~ Buckets/ containers are your best friend; make sure to have several on hand. 5 gallon buckets are great but a few smaller buckets for shorter stemmed blooms are also helpful.
(Check with your local florist for gerber daisy buckets. They will often sell them to you fairly cheaply and some might even give them to you! We've also used dollar store trash cans)
You will need:
- clippers
- buckets/containers for water
- flower food
This gets messy! Set up in a place that is easy to sweep/ clean up. We like to put a small tarp under us so that when all the clipping is done, you can bundle it up easier and dump it in your green waste container of choice.
Step 1. Fill your buckets with fresh, room temperature water (not too cold and not too hot!)
Step 2. Your flowers likely came with packets of flower food so put one packet in each bucket.
Step 3. Remove all plastic and rubber bands from each bunch of flowers.***
Step 4. Strip all greenery from each stem (up to the flower itself.)
Step 5. Cut the stem at an angle and place into your fresh water.
Step 6. Don't pack your buckets too tight, your flowers need some room to breathe and fluff out.
Step 7. Place buckets in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
Step 8. Let sit until you are ready to create!
